Kaunas Region

Kaunas County Public Library is the centre of methodology, bibliography information and inter library book loan of the public libraries in Kaunas and Marijampolė vicinity municipalities. KCPL co-ordinates activities of the libraries, improves qualification of the librarians as well as organizes events and implements mutual projects.

Starting the 1st of July, 2010 the Library benefactor is Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.

On the Order Nr ĮV-372of 29th of June, 2010, of Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania “Dėl apskričių viešųjų bibliotekų veiklos teritorijų” new territories for the library activities were determined. As a result, now, regarding the activities, the region of Kaunas County Public Library also includes both Kaunas and Marijampolė vicinity municipalities

About Kaunas County

Kaunas County is located in Lithuania’s Midlands. There also are other 6 counties situated around Kaunas. Those are counties of: Alytus Vilnius, Panevėžys, Šiaulai, Tauragė and Marijampolė.
Kaunas County consists of: Kaunas and Birštonas cities as well as Kaunas, Kaišiadorys, Prienai, Raseiniai, Kėdainiai and Jonava municipalities of vicinities.

About Marijampolė County

The county is situated in the South-West of Lithuania, neighboring with Kaliningrad and Poland while inside of Lithuania – with Kaunas, Alytus and Tauragė counties.

Marijampolė County consists of: Marijampolė, Kalvarija, Kazlų Rūda, Vilkaviškis vicinity and Šakiai vicinity municipalities.
Population: 181 000
Area: 4463 km²

Within the Kaunas Region there are 13 centralized systems of municipal public libraries (8 in Kaunas Municipality and 5 in Marijampolė Municipality), which provide services for the residents of Kaunas Region. The libraries also join together 304 libraries:

• 13 public libraries within the centres of municipalities
• 45 city libraries
• 246 libraries from rural regions

There are 3 228 418 printed documents collected in the library book funds and 18% of the residents use library services. During the 2010 there were 149 644 patrons served, 2 250 369 people visited the libraries and 4 096 464 printed documents were loaned to the visitors. There are 3 656 workstations for library services and 1 116 of those are computer workstations.
